This is the wrap up blog for the Love series.
We started with God’s love for us and how it is the foundation of all love relationships. God’s love is everlasting, unconditional, full of mercy and grace. It has strength and humility, compassion and the desire to serve.
We then moved on to recognizing our part in our relationship with God – making it a 2-way street.
And last week we took a look at the love/hate relationship we have with ourselves.
So, I want to round the series out with our love for each other. Here is what I came up with.
Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment is. His response was this, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it, Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39)
To love the Lord like that, we need to know, believe and trust who He is. To love ourselves, we need to know, believe and trust who He made us to be. THEN we can love others.
When we get it out of order, it affects us deeply. We allow others, instead of God, to tell us who we are. Through their lens, we try to love ourselves and the world. Then when we are betrayed, we assume we are not enough and think we are unlovable or unworthy of love. As we continue to get hurt, our hearts, our souls and our minds have a hard time loving anyone – God, ourselves or others.
So, my hope for all of us is this.
May we take the time to build a love relationship with the One who made us.
So that we can learn to love ourselves through His mercy and grace.
And in turn, be capable of seeing the image of the same God who loves us in others.
