I am going to designate the next 4 Fridays to this very emotionally charged word…LOVE.
Some of y’all may have just rolled your eyes and did a little baby barf in your mouth because you have had such a rotten run in with that word. Others may have gotten butterflies because you are in the warm and fuzzy stage of that word. And then there are those who sat back and smiled. You thought of all the effort it has taken to get to where you are right now with the one you love and are grateful for it.
We all know that the stronger the foundation of something is, the stronger the structure built on it will be. So, I want to start at the very beginning of Love.
God demonstrated His love for us in the very creation of humanity. We are made in His image and He is Love.
God doesn’t love us because we have earned it. He doesn’t tell us that He will love us even more if we would just stop sinning. No, God loves us unconditionally, right now where we are in our mess. “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
I am grateful that scripture points out that salvation is through our belief in Jesus (John 3:16-17). It does not depend on our efforts to be good enough. It never feels good to be in a performance-based relationship. In fact, it is exhausting.
God loves us with compassion, strength, kindness and protection. He loves us with beauty and adventure.
So, regardless of what your earthly love relationships look like, remember that God loves you unconditionally. Trusting this is the foundational building block.
