The grass is always greener on the other side.
Isn’t that how we see things?
The other job, the other car, the other relationship – the one we don’t have seems so much better.
I have been thinking about these 2 concepts for several days – the longing for what we don’t have and the comparison of what we do.
As I am building my This Is The Day ministry, I find myself looking and comparing it to other speakers and life coaches who are where I want to be.
Do you see the problem with that?
I am comparing my future to someone’s present, forgetting that they had a past. Did you follow that?!
Where I am now is dependent on my past effort and God’s timing. Where I want to be a year from now is dependent on my present effort and God’s timing.
It’s so easy to forget that others have put in the effort to get to where they are now. They, too, had to go through the trenches, learn the lessons, turn their goals over to God, trust His timing, get it right, get it wrong, all in order to be where we see them today.
But instead of recognizing that, we beat ourselves up, think we aren’t worthy, lose the excitement for our passion and allow Satan to suck the joy right out of us!
The grass isn’t necessarily greener on the other side, the grass is greener where the soil has been tilled, the seeds have been planted and the water has been sprayed.
It takes effort and God’s timing to grow green grass – not simply looking at the picture on the bag of grass seed and longing for it.
Why are we even comparing ourselves to others in the first place?
It starts at an early age.
As parents, we compare our kids against each other or other people’s kids.
Who’s taller? Who walked first? Who has better grades? Why can’t you be more like ___________?
What are we telling our kids by doing this?
I wish this were a live conversation because I would like to hear your answer!
So we grow up asking ourselves if we measure up.
“Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live it’s whole life believing that it’s stupid.” Albert Einstein
EXACTLY!!!
What does God have to say about this?
“Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.” Proverbs 4:25-27
When we find ourselves turning to the right and left, let’s instead turn our eyes to God.
“‘I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest in hope” Acts 2:25-26
