A few weeks back, we had visitors at my gym. I asked each member in class to share with the new folks how long they had been a member here. Some were 6 months, some were 1 ½ years, and some were 2 years or longer.
What I watch happen was as people would say their time frame, there was a moment of recognition for not just how long they had been there, but where they were at physically. Some were proud of how far they had come and some kind of looked disappointed with themselves.
Conversations came about later that confirmed their disappointed looks. They expressed that after all this time, they thought they would be farther along with some skills or that their body composition would be different.
As I thought more and more about the remarks, the thought that came to my mind was that we get a false sense of reality when we think time is what creates change.
I am sure you have heard it said that it takes 21 days to create a new habit.
That, my friends, is a false promise.
Why?
Because you can say you are going to set aside 21 day to lose 5 pounds, but if you don’t do anything in those 21 days to make it happen, there will not be a new habit formed that will help you lose the weight!
It’s not just wanting to lose weight or learning a new skill or finding a new path in life. You have to DO something about it.
So, if you are wanting to make changes in your body composition or learn how to do a pull up, double unders, toes to bar or even start developing healthy self-care routines, there are actions you must take to make it happen.
I am a huge proponent for RAS Statements and putting stick-it notes all over your house of I AM statements.
But if there is no action behind the words…then they are just words.
And just words are like wishes. There is a big difference between wishes and hope.
A wish says, “Wouldn’t it be great if__________ “I would really love it if______________happened”.
A hope says, “This is what I want, and I am going to do all I can to get there.
Take a look at what you want and ask yourself if you are wishing or hoping for it to happen.
